If you’ve asked three web designers for a quote, you’ve probably gotten three completely different numbers. One came in at $1,500. One at $8,000. One at $22,000. All three said they could build you “a professional business website.”

The confusion is real — and it’s not accidental. Web design pricing is genuinely inconsistent because the industry has no standard definition of what a website project includes — which is one reason our Momentum service is built around a fixed, business-first scope. Here’s how to make sense of it.

The Honest Price Ranges

$500 – $2,500: Template + DIY hybrid

At this price point, you’re usually getting a pre-built template with your content dropped in, or a DIY platform (Wix, Squarespace) with some setup help. Fast to launch. Cheap up front. Usually limited in flexibility and SEO capability.

This range works for: a sole proprietor who needs a basic web presence and isn’t relying on the site to generate leads.

$3,000 – $8,000: Small agency or freelancer, custom build

This is where most small business websites in Orange County get built. You’re getting a custom design (or heavily customized template), WordPress or similar platform, basic SEO setup, and a handful of pages. Quality varies enormously. The difference between a $3,500 site and a $7,500 site at this tier is usually experience, process, and how much strategy is included.

This range works for: established small businesses that need a professional site and have some clarity on what they want.

$10,000 – $25,000: Full-service, strategy-first build

At this level, you’re paying for discovery, strategy, copywriting, custom design, development, and a launch process that includes testing and optimization. The site is built around business goals — not just a design brief. Ongoing retainers for maintenance and improvement are common.

This range works for: businesses where the website is a primary lead source and a poorly performing site has real revenue consequences.

$25,000+: Enterprise or highly custom

Custom applications, e-commerce at scale, complex integrations, or large multi-location businesses. Beyond the scope of most Orange County small business needs.

What Actually Drives the Price

Copywriting. Most quotes don’t include it. Writing good website copy — that actually converts visitors into leads — is a separate skill from design. If it’s not in the quote, ask who’s writing your content.

Strategy. A designer who asks “what do you want the site to look like?” is selling design. A firm that asks “what do you want the site to accomplish?” is selling outcomes. The second costs more and is worth it.

SEO foundation. A site that can’t be found is a site that doesn’t work. Technical SEO setup — site structure, page speed, schema markup, metadata — should be part of any build. If it’s an add-on, that’s a red flag.

Photography and media. Stock photos are cheap. Real photography of your business, team, or work costs more and converts better. Usually not included in standard quotes.

Ongoing support. What happens when something breaks at 9pm on a Friday? Post-launch support is often undersold at signing and overpriced when you actually need it.

The Question Behind the Question

The real question isn’t “how much does a website cost?” It’s “how much should I spend, for my business, right now?”

That depends on what your current website is doing (or failing to do), what your business goals are over the next 12 months, and what a realistic return on that investment looks like.

A $5,000 website that generates $50,000 in new business is a bargain. A $2,000 website that generates nothing is an expensive mistake.

Before You Commit to a Budget

The smartest thing you can do before signing a web design contract — or setting a budget — is get an independent picture of where your current site stands.

The Compass is a structured evaluation of your website, search presence, and technology stack. It tells you what’s working, what isn’t, and what a realistic improvement plan looks like. Most clients use it to make a much more informed decision about what to invest in and who to hire.

At $1,995, it frequently saves businesses from a much more expensive mistake.
