Most business owners assume their website is neutral — that if it’s not actively generating leads, it’s at least not doing any harm.
That assumption is usually wrong.
A website that loads slowly, communicates unclearly, or looks dated doesn’t just fail to convert visitors. It actively damages your credibility. Our Momentum service is built to fix that — a website that loads fast, speaks clearly, and earns trust. In many cases, it’s costing you business you don’t even know you’re losing — because people leave without ever calling — and if getting found in search is part of what’s missing, that’s a related problem worth addressing.
Here’s how to tell if that’s happening to yours.
Signs Your Website Is Working Against You
It loads slowly
Visitors make a judgment about your business within seconds of landing on your site. If the page is still loading, many of them are already gone. Google research has shown that the probability of a visitor leaving increases sharply with every additional second of load time.
A slow site also ranks lower in search results. Google considers page speed a ranking factor, which means a slow site is invisible to people who would otherwise find you.
To check: Google “PageSpeed Insights” and run your URL. A score below 50 on mobile is a problem.
The mobile experience is broken
More than half of all web traffic now comes from mobile devices. If your site is hard to navigate on a phone — small text, buttons too close together, content that doesn’t reformat for small screens — you’re losing those visitors immediately.
This is especially true for local searches. Someone driving through Irvine searching for your type of business on their phone will hit your site, find it hard to use, and call your competitor instead.
It’s unclear what you do and who you serve
You have about five seconds to answer the question a new visitor is asking: “Is this relevant to me?” If your homepage requires reading more than a sentence or two to answer that question, most visitors won’t wait.
Read your own homepage headline right now. Does it immediately communicate what you do, who you do it for, and why it matters? If not, people are leaving confused.
There’s no clear next step
What should a visitor do after reading your homepage? If the answer is unclear — or if your call to action is a vague “Learn More” — visitors have no path forward. A website without a clear next step is a website that doesn’t convert.
You haven’t updated it in over two years
An outdated website signals to visitors that the business behind it might not be active. Old team photos, stale blog posts, outdated service descriptions, or broken links all erode trust — even if the visitor doesn’t consciously notice them.
Google also deprioritizes sites that aren’t maintained. Fresh, relevant content is a factor in how the algorithm evaluates your site.
You have no idea what’s actually happening on it
If you don’t know how many people visit your site each month, where they come from, what pages they look at, or how many of them contact you — you’re flying blind. You can’t improve what you’re not measuring.
Google Analytics (free) and Google Search Console (free) should both be set up and reviewed regularly. If neither is installed, you have no visibility into how your site is performing.
The Subtler Problem: What You’re Not Seeing
The most damaging thing about a poorly performing website is that the losses are invisible. You don’t see the 40 people who visited last week and left without calling. You don’t know that the search terms your best customers use aren’t on any of your pages. You don’t know that a competitor’s site is capturing the business you should be getting.
You just know that your phone isn’t ringing as much as it should.
What an Honest Assessment Looks Like
Fixing a website that’s working against you starts with understanding exactly what’s wrong — not guessing, and not relying on a web designer’s opinion (they have a financial incentive to recommend a full rebuild).
